About

Freyda Fae was born out of a quest for ancestral healing.

The shop is named after our Head Witch in Charge’s (HWIC) fourth great grandmother.

Freyda Krock, lived in Rokiškis, Lithuania, presumably in one of the Jewish shtetls. Her name translates to "joy" in Yiddish.

Lithuanian Jews were very poor, but they did not make peace with their bitter fate and went out in the world to search for ways to earn a living. In the better-off Ukraine, one would meet Lithuanian Jews who were teachers and skilled workers. Lithuanian Jews went far afield to find a livelihood. Excerpt from The Lithuanian Shtetl

HWIC Jenny likes to imagine Freyda was a whimsical and fierce woman who might have even made her own tinctures and goods. We hope this strong connection to ancestry cradles our shop and allows it to be in thoughtful alignment with what you seek.

Oh and for the Fae. We think it was a mischievous Fae that caused a bump in the road that led to a necessary pivot from our original name. Fae, or Irish Fairy, brings in the Irish lineage of HWIC’s partner, Eugene. Eugene’s mother comes from a family of 15 siblings whose ancestors resided in Ireland. His father's lineage can be traced to Ireland as well.
